A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

The 2010 – 2011 season of the ASQRS season is officially underway. The Leadership committee has approved the budget and annual plan, and both have been submitted to National. Our first professional development meeting (a.k.a., diner meeting) was well attended. Many thanks to Rich Henderson and Bill Sonnefeld for getting everything set up. Bob Doering drove here from his home in Ohio to speak at that event. He shared his insights into using statistical process control where tool wear is major contributor to deviations of the output of a milling process. He has developed a straightforward method of measurement that can increase output and makes life easier for the machinists on the shop floor. If you didn’t have the opportunity to attend the session check out Bob’s Website (http://www.correctspc.com/).

Bill has found some excellent speakers for the upcoming meetings. Continue to check the ASQRS Website http://www.asqrs.org/calendar.htm for details and to register.

The ASQRS annual plan is ambitious, in keeping with the section’s traditions. Improving and expanding communications is one of our more immediate objectives in the plan. David Gilfoy is updating our Website, and we are extending our presence in the social media realm. In the not so distant future we will have an ASQRS group on Linked In, a presence on Face Book and something on Twitter. For those that can’t wait, ASQ National has a presence on all three. Suggestions for the Website should be submitted to David (qualityauditeditor@yahoo.com) as should comments and suggestions on using the social media sites.

We also want to expand our reach to everybody in the Rochester area using the Web and traditional print media. Suggestions for getting the message out should go to Meg Godly secretary@asqrs.org or any other member of the LC.

Last month I wrote about ASQ’s role in Social Responsibility and that continues to be a major topic on the ASQ Website. This month I’d like to mention a few of the resources that are just a click away at the National ASQ Website.

I have to be honest and tell you that I hadn’t spent much time at the site until last year when I became more involved with our section’s operations. Since then I try to spend at least a few minutes a day on the site. The site is an incredible resource. I find something of interest every time I log in. I’m often surprised by what I turn up. There is really something for everybody on the site.

If you’re just starting a quality career, or if you just want to get back to the basics, check out “new to quality?” and “basic concepts” under the “Knowledge Center.” For more seasoned quality veterans the “Areas of Use” section offers inspiration and insights into the ways tried and true quality tools are being used to solve new challenges in education, manufacturing, service, and healthcare.

Are you currently involved in implementation of a quality program or is your organization is getting ready for an audit? Take a few minutes and check out the resources in “Standards Central”, there is a wealth of valuable information there.

To find out the latest news in the areas of your expertise go to your Division. You’ll also find links back to your section. If you’re in need of more serious publications (e.g., standards) the ASQ Store is a great place to shop.

ASQ has a very rich history and has grown into a worldwide organization. Working with local professionals has been a rewarding experience. But, I’m becoming ever more appreciative of what ASQ has done in the past and of the challenges this organization is taking on today. Do take some time and poke around the Website http://www.asq.org. You too may be surprised by what you find there, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Happy Browsing,

Leigh Rundell
2010-2011 Chair

HOW DOES A FREE CLASS SOUND?

From the Education Chair,

The Rochester ASQ section is offering several educational programs for the 2010/11 session. These programs are in the initial planning stages but at least one will be a refresher course for one of the ASQ exams. I'm looking for a few volunteers to help organize and host a session. This will involve attending several planning meetings and helping to coordinate one of the training sessions. The bonus is the person will be able to attend the session at no charge and get educational credits for recertification. Please contact Paul Bonsignore at paulbonsignore@hotmail.com if you are interested in volunteering.

Thank You,
