A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Hello,

Summer has come to an end and your ASQRS Executive Committee members semi-hiatus are over. Audit reports, budgets and annual plans are being completed and submitted to National. Planning is underway for the conference and our slate of monthly professional development meetings is being filled in.
Of course, as always there are lots of opportunities to get involved with our local section. In particular we desperately need someone to chair the Conference Committee. This is a great opportunity for anyone that wants to gain visibility in the community and learn about the internal workings of our section and ASQ national. We have several experienced individuals (who are fun to work with) that already know how to take care of the details, but we need somebody to organize the effort. If interested contact me or anyone else on the Executive Committee.
I know that most of us are focused on our jobs that contribute to the quality of the products and services that our employers are delivering in this community; this is great. While we take care of the day-to-day tasks, ASQ is contributing to international efforts to expand the influence of quality processes to a wide range of problems. The initiative has been given the title of Social Responsibility. Social Responsibility is:
“People and organizations behaving and conducting business ethically and with sensitivity towards social, cultural, economic and environmental issues. Striving for social responsibility helps individuals, organizations and governments have a positive impact on development, business and society.”
In more concise terms, social responsibility is doing the right thing.
ASQ is the ANSI selection to be the U.S. member of the ISO group focused on social responsibility. ASQ’s assignment is to administer the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on Social Responsibility. In that role ASQ is bringing together a cross section of industry experts to help develop the standard. There are six categories of interest:
    Industry
    Government
    Non-Governmental organizations
    Consumer
    Labor
    Services, support Research and Others
The objective of the initiative it is to draw attention to affects of business decisions on people, communities, and opinions of customers around world.
Development of the standard hopes to:
    Broaden awareness of social responsibility.
Help organizations understand the differences between cultures, societal, environmental concerns, legal differences, and economic conditions in international markets.
Provide practical guidance related to making social responsibility operate.
    Emphasize performance results and improvement.
Increase confidence and satisfaction of customers and other stake holders.
Keep standards consistent with international treaties and conventions.
Develop a common nomenclature for social responsibility.

The group hopes to publish the standard later this year.

Besides taking on this role, ASQ currently administers four TAG’s:
U.S. TAG 56 to ISO/TC 56 on Dependability
U.S. TAG 69 to ISO/TC 69 on Statistics
U.S. TAG 176 to ISO/TC 176 on Quality management
U.S. TAG 207 to ISO/TC 207 on Environmental management
